The RL’s Collision Mitigation Braking System, or CMBS, is to help reduce the likelihood of rear-ending the vehicle ahead, by alerting the driver before the collision occurs. When a collision is considered unavoidable, the CMBS system takes steps to minimize the severity of the collision. The system works by using a radar transceiver that constantly monitors the distance of any vehicle or object ahead within its approximately 330 foot range, and calculates the closing speed between it and the RL. If CMBS determines that a collision is likely, a series of beeps sound and the word ‘Brake’ flashed on the multi information display. If the driver responds appropriately, by turning the wheel and or braking to avoid the collision, CMBS will disengage. If the driver does not respond sufficiently, the CMBS will trigger a brake actuater to apply light brake force and will produce a slight tug on the driver’s seat belt. The system will disengage again if the driver undertakes sufficient evasive action. However, if at any point, CMBS determines that a collision is unavoidable, the system immediately enters its third stage. It will apply stronger brake force to mitigate the force of impact and apply stronger seat belt retraction for the driver and, if present, the front passenger, to better position them prior to the collision. While CMBS can help the driver avoid an accident through a series of visual, audible, and tactile warnings, and start to apply brakes, it cannot avoid a collision on its own; Control of the vehicle remains with the driver. By taking action when the driver does not, CMBS can mitigate the force of a collision. CMBS is always on. However, the driver can turn CMBS off by pressing the ‘CMBS Off’ button to the left of the tachometer. A warning light will come on and stay on as long as the CMBS system is turned off.
